Battery Basics

When you know, you know

Standard Flooded

Standard Flooded Technology for Car and Truck Batteries: The most prevalent type of auto battery is the standard flooded battery, serving as a reliable power source for vehicle ignition, starting, and standard electrical accessory loads. It is designed to provide power to the starter and ignition system to initiate the engine, while also offering additional power when the vehicle's electrical demands surpass the charging system's supply. Additionally, the battery powers electrical systems like clocks and computers when the vehicle is not in operation, and it safeguards the electrical system from voltage spikes. In standard vehicles, the Starting, Lighting, Ignition (SLI) battery typically maintains a high state of charge and doesn't require deep-cycling capabilities. Currently, most automotive batteries on the market are standard flooded batteries.

Standard Flooded Battery Applications: Standard flooded batteries are well-suited for vehicle applications with typical electrical requirements.

Standard Flooded Battery Construction: 12-volt lead-acid batteries consist of six cells. In each cell, positive and negative plates are arranged in an alternating pattern and kept apart by a microporous plastic separator. These stacked plates are then submerged in an electrolyte solution, commonly known as battery acid. The electrolyte surrounds the plates and separators, creating a conduit for the flow of electricity.

Standard Flooded Battery Benefits:

  • Reliable starting power

  • Basic charge acceptance

  • Suitable for all climates

  • Lowest-cost option

Standard Flooded Battery Disadvantages:

  • Limited ability to power large accessory loads

  • Limited cycling capability

  • Shorter life compared to other technologies

AGM

Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) Technology: AGM, short for Absorbent Glass Mat, represents an advanced lead-acid battery designed to meet the elevated electrical requirements of modern vehicles and start-stop applications. AGM batteries excel in their resistance to vibrations, as they are fully sealed, non-spillable, and require no maintenance. Offering improved cycling performance, minimal gassing, and reduced acid leakage compared to traditional lead-acid batteries, AGM technology delivers superior overall life performance.

Start-Stop Vehicles: AGM batteries serve as the preferred solution for start-stop vehicle technology, which has gained popularity in Europe and entered the U.S. market with model-year 2013 vehicles. Start-stop technology automatically shuts off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop, such as at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic, and smoothly restarts it when the clutch is engaged or the brake pedal is released. During engine-off periods, the battery becomes the sole power source for all the car's electrical devices, including air conditioning, the radio, and the navigation system. Additionally, advanced start-stop systems with features like regenerative braking or passive boost place even more strain on the battery. These vehicles require a robust battery to power electrical loads during engine-off periods and support numerous starts per trip. AGM technology, with its superior cycling capability, charge acceptance, and ability to operate at a low state of charge, is the ideal choice to meet these demanding requirements.

AGM Battery Construction: In AGM batteries, a crucial absorbent glass mat acts as a separator, effectively containing and immobilizing the battery's acid to prevent free flow. The positive and negative plates are tightly compressed within each cell and secured under pressure in a plastic case. This internal compression minimizes plate material shedding during cycling, resulting in significantly prolonged battery life. The compacted elements also contribute to reduced internal resistance and optimal pulse power output. A sturdy container ensures consistent compression throughout the battery's lifespan. The design also incorporates relief venting to release minor pressure build-up that occurs during charging. These valves open at low pressure and automatically close, preventing air from leaking into the battery.

AGM Battery Benefits:

  • Up to 2x longer life than standard flooded batteries

  • Designed for harsh climates and demanding conditions

  • Handles high electrical loads

  • Quickly recharges and extends cycle life
